1. A false idea or belief: “he had no illusions about her”.
2. A deceptive appearance or impression: “the illusion of togetherness”

ma·yaNoun/ˈmīə/
1. The supernatural power wielded by gods and demons to produce illusions.
2. The power by which the universe becomes manifest

The world illusion, maya, is individually called avidya, literally, “not-knowledge,” ignorance, delusion. Maya or avidya can never be destroyed through intellectual conviction or analysis, but solely through attaining the interior state of nirbikalpa samadhi.

Definition:

at·ti·tudeNoun/ˈatiˌt(y)o͞od/

1. A settled way of thinking or feeling, typically reflected in a person’s behavior

2. A position of the body proper to or implying an action or mental state

“Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens. “~ Kahlil Gibran

“Whenever you’re in conflict with someone, there is one factor that can make the difference between damaging your relationship and deepening it. That factor is attitude.” – William James

“The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes of mind.” ~ William James

“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”-Jimmy Dean

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company… a church… a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past… we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you… we are in charge of our Attitudes.” – Charles R. Swindoll

“As water when congealed becomes ice, so the visible form of the Almighty is the materialized manifestation of the all-pervading formless Brahman. It may be called, in fact, Sat-chit-ânanda solidified. As the ice, being part and parcel of the water, remains in the water for a time and afterwards melts in it, so the Personal God is part and parcel of the Impersonal. He rises from the Impersonal, remains there, and ultimately merges into it and disappears.” – Ramakrishna Paramhansa

[1] While a bell is being rung, the repeated ding-dongs can be distinguished one from the other, but when we stop ringing, then an indistinguishable sound only remains audible. We can easily distinguish one note from the other, as if each distinct note had a certain shape; but the continued and unbroken sound when the ding-dongs have ceased is indistinguishable, as if formless. Like the sound of the bell, God is both with and without form. – Ramakrishna Paramhansa

“God as Heavenly Father [1] The Bible reveals God as the Lord of the universe and calls Him “Father” in both Old and New Testaments. He is the Father and Lord of creation.

James describes Him as “the Father of the lights.” He created the stars
as well as the angels. The Old Testament names angels as “the sons of
God” (benai elohim). Paul says that every family under heaven
is named or set aside for Him (Eph. 3:15). We all need a caring human
father (or an equivalent) as early as possible in our lives to help us
understand what God the Father is like as a Person.”

[2] ” the Psalmist (10:14) praises God as a loving Father: “Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation.” Hosea writes (14:3) that the fatherless find mercy in Him. God is described in Psalm 10:14 as the one who helps the fatherless. King David says, “When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.” (Psalm 27:10). The Lord God is more than willing to help make up for absent fathers. Surely the most wonderful aspect of being a Christi an is that we all have a unique relationship with the Creator of the universe, the God and Father of Jesus, the Living Spirit who is Lord of all history. Through faith in Jesus each one us may call God “Abba”. (Abba is the Hebrew intimate word for “daddy.”)” Source:GOD OUR FATHERby Lambert Dolphin and David Sacarelos

“Always remember.that the Great Mystery is good; evil can come only from ourselves!”
–Grandmother of Charles Eastman. SANTEE SIOUX

The Great Mystery is love, good and principle. He is a guiding Father. He doesn’t play games. He knows only how to love. Sometimes, when
things go wrong, we blame Him or others. Usually, if we are honest, we
can see how decisions or things done in the past put us in a position
to be hurt. It comes back to us. When this happens, it is not something
the Creator caused, but something we, ourselves caused. Most of our
problems are of our own making. When this happens, we should correct
what we’ve done, ask the Great Spirit for forgiveness and pray for
guidance in the future.

Grace defined

“The Grace of the Lord flows down unceasingly and at all times. A person who has made God-realization the one and exclusive goal of his life, has already found refuge in Him – even though He may, for the time being, declare Himself by His absence.”

“You want to know whether Grace is without cause or reason? Certainly, for Grace is by it’s very nature beyond cause or reason…. the eternal relationship which by nature exists between father and son does surely not depend on any action. The Supreme Father, the Supreme Mother and the Supreme Friend – verily, God is all of these. Consequently how
can there be a cause or reason for His Grace? You are His and in
whatever way He may draw you to Him, it is for the sake of revealing
Himself to you.”

“The ceaseless, never-ending current of divine Mercy and Compassion ever flows forth; in that current one should bathe.”

“That you have become aware of not knowing is also God’s grace, and your aspiration is equally God’s grace.”

- Anandamayee Ma

“The spiritual path is a question of supply and demand. If the demand is there in the form of constant aspiration and remembrance of God, the supply in the form of guidance, protection and peace is
bound to manifest itself. God, who is an ocean of mercy and love is
waiting with outstretched arms to receive His children. So let us turn
to Him now.” – Swami Sivananda

“That is the mystery of grace: it never comes too late.” -François Mauriac

“You may try thousands of times, but nothing can be achieved without God’s grace. One cannot see God without His grace. Is it an easy thing to receive grace? One must altogether renounce egotism; one cannot see God as long as one feels, `I am the doer.’ Ramakrishna, `The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna’

“Caroline Myss says grace is what heals us, the grace that comes abundantly through prayer. She knows we cannot define grace with our minds. While it is closely associated with Christianity and Catholicism, it is also found in Hinduism and other traditions. It is a subtle, divine force beyond the grasp of reason; the laws of nature are often subject to grace, instead of the other way around.

To understand grace, we have to experience it. That does not mean
it will deliver an event like “an ocean parting in front of you”, she
explains. Instead, it generally arrives in small packages we may not
even recognize. For instance, grace can come to us in those angry
moments when we’re ready to let loose with terrible words.

“Then, this instinct comes up, a voice, and you hear, ‘Do you really want to
say that ? Do you really want to do that ? Do you really want to play
that card ? ” Myss says. “That’s grace, because in that instant, wha’t
really happening is a divine intervention that’s stopping you from
destroying a whole part of your life, and you don’t even know it. You
are thinking only about yourself and winning, or destroying another
human being and getting your way and being right, or whatever pettiness
is motivating you. You have no idea that you’re about to destroy
yourself and another human being just for the sake of saying one
sentence in a moment of madness. Then something comes in and says to
get a grip on yourself: that’s grace. Because only grace can hold you
back from the madness of an ego out of control.”

To truly know grace, we must turn inward with prayer, and then grace can arrive, announced by a deep, full sense of tranquility”.

“The divine grace is life’s greatest treasure. If there is self- surrender, there is the inflow of grace. Lord’s grace will descend in proportion to the degree of surrender. The more the surrender, the more the grace.” Swami Sivananda

“The minimum qualification for Grace is surrender of ego.” Sri Sathya Sai Baba

“JEWELS give Joy, not Gold. You can experience the Name, you can imbibe the Form; you can take them to heart and dwell upon them and fill yourself with the joy that they evoke. That is why Jayadeva, Gomanka, Ramakrishna and others wished to remain ants, tasting Sugar rather than becoming sugar itself. The Name is like the seed, implanted in your heart; when the shower of His Grace falls upon it; it sprouts into a lovely tree. All trees that sprout from the Name are equally lovely and shady” Sri Sathya Sai Baba

“Gratitude has been such a powerful exercise for me. Every morning I get up and say a thank you. Every morning when my feet hit the floor, ‘Thank You.’ And then I start running through what I’m grateful for, as I’m brushing my teeth and doing the things I do in the morning. And I’m not just thinking about them and doing some rote routine. I’m putting it out there and I’m feeling the feelings of gratitude.” James Ray

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” ~ Melody Beattie

Guru / Spiritual Guide / Master / Spiritual Teacher

Guru defined: 1. Hinduism. a preceptor giving personal religious instruction. 2. an intellectual or spiritual guide or leader. 3. any person who counsels or advises; mentor

Posts Simple Truths on Guru / Spiritual Guide / Master / Spiritual Teacher in this thread, that are not from a specific religious path.

[1] “God alone is the one Guru. If you pray inwardly, God will respond to your
prayer and grant it.”
[2] “The Guru’s words are mantras. According to the Guru’s instructions practice “sadhana” with deep religious feeling and god will have to respond.”
Anandamayee Ma

Gur Dhobi Sikh Kapda, Saboo Sirjan Har
Surti Sila Pur Dhoiye, Nikse Jyoti Apaar

“Guru is the washer man, disciple is the cloth
The name of God liken to the soap
Wash the mind on foundation firm
To realize the glow of Truth ” – Sant Kabir

“The man who is a seeker after Truth shall find his own true Self within himself through his Guru’s instructions. In the mantra bestowed by the Guru, the Guru Himself is indeed present. You may see His body die, but the Guru never leaves you.” – Anandamayee Ma

[1]
“The Guru actually emerges from within. When genuine search takes effect, his genuine manifestation is bound to occur; it can not possibly be otherwise. The One, assuming Himself the shape of the
Guru, of His own accord brings about His manifestation or becomes
manifested. ”
[2]
“The Guru’s power is vested in the disciple who prays for the Guru’s grace. All this is the manifestation, the Self-revelation of Him who shines resplendent within. The Guru’s grace should be solicited without ceasing.” Anandamayee Ma

There are Gurus who are householders and, at the same time, they are realised souls. Whose house are they inhabiting? It is God’s House. And who are their children and family? They are the children that God has chosen for them. The Guru is like a tree, and a tree without branches is nothing. Source:Excerpt from The Spiritual Journey: Oneness In Diversity

Life always gives us exactly the teacher we need at every moment. This includes every mosquito, every misfortune, every red light, every traffic jam, every obnoxious supervisor (or employee), every illness, every loss, every moment of joy or depression, every addiction, every piece of garbage, every breath.
Every moment is the guru. ~ Joko Beck

Disciple: How is the Guru found? Master: God, who is immanent, in His grace takes pity on the loving devotee and manifests Himself according to the devotee’s development. The devotee thinks that He is a man and expects a relationship as between two physical bodies. But the Guru, who is God or the Self incarnate, works from within, helps the man to see the error of his ways and guides him in the right path until he realises the Self within. Sri Raman Maharshi

Guru is the God, say the scriptures. Indeed, the ‘guru’ in Vedic tradition is looked upon as one no less than a God. ‘Guru’ is a honorific designation of a preceptor as defined and explained variously in the scriptures and ancient literary works including epics. The English word ‘guru’ has its etymological origin in the Sanskrit term. The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Current English defines it as “Hindu spiritual teacher or head of religious sect; influential teacher; revered mentor” Source

Isvara (God) is guru of gurus. He removes the veil of ignorance and blesses the ignorant jiva (soul). The aspirant should regard his immediate guru – in the physical form – as an incarnation of that Guru of all gurus. He should have equal devotion to him. Guru in physical form is the main source and embodiment of all good and happiness that accrues to the disciple. – by: Swami Sivananda The Guru-sishya Relationship Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha

True spiritual instruction forges an inseparable bond between the disciple and the Teacher, consisting of gratefulness and loyalty in the disciple
and grace and fond concern in the Teacher. In fact, Guru-sishya
relationship forms the backbone of true spiritual life and saadhana. For
all the doubts and deficiencies of the mind, qualms and queries of the
intelligence and fondness and feelings of the heart, the Teacher is the
last refuge. Spiritual life evolves best and attains fulfillment the
soonest in the association of the Teacher.

:::

The purpose of the interaction (of the Sishya with the Guru) should be to open
oneself up completely without reservation and to imbibe whatever is
given without any resistance and grow towards fulfillment. In the mind
level the association will generate nobler emotions, more and more peace and sublimity. In the intelligence level it will generate and arouse more and more knowledge and enlightenment. And in the sensory level it will bring about moderation, more of purity and sublimation. An integrated growth of the personality should take place. A close interaction, imbibing, expressing, sharing and further imbibing and thereby transforming oneself – is the process. This is the benefit of going to a Sadguru. A Sadguru alone can bring about these transformations. (c) Narayanashrama Tapovanam, 2010 .brahmavi dya.org

“The guru is God himself manifesting in a personal form to guide the aspirant. Grace of God takes the form of the guru. To see the guru is to see God. The guru is united with God. He inspires devotion in others and his presence purifies all.”- Sri Swami Sivananda

“The Master who’s full of sweetness

Is so drunk with love, he’s oblivious.
“Will you give me
some of your sweetness?”
“I have none,” he says,
unaware of his richness.”
the action or practice of a person who reads.

“The study of sacred books and listening to religious discourses is meant to develop self-control and peace.

I am not for indiscriminate reading of books however valuable they may be. Much reading tends to confuse the mind. It fosters argumentation and intellectual pride.

What I insist upon is putting the things read into practice, if not all, a least a
thing or two. Moreover, remember that a book is only a pointer, a
guide, a signpost.

Reading alone cannot be the completion of the journey. It is only the first step; read for the sake of practising, not for reading’s sake. Too many books in a room indicates that a person is suffering from intellectual illnesses, just as too many tins, capsules and bottles of medicines in a cupboard indicate that the
person is suffering from physical illness.” – Sathya Sai Baba

in⋅ter⋅con⋅nect–verb (used with object) 1.to establish communication between; put in communication with one another.

“The earth was created by the assistance of the sun, and it should be left as it was… The country was made without lines of demarcation, and it is no man’s business to divide it…” –Chief Joseph, NEZ PERCE

There is danger when we start to draw lines and boundaries. This is true whether outside ourselves or inside ourselves. The danger is losing sight of the interconnectedness. When we lose sight of interconnectedness, separation, possessiveness (this is mine, I can do what I want) and infighting results. Even at an individual level, if we don’t believe we are connected to all things we get self-centered and have self-seeking motives. We must think in harmony, balance and integrity. We must see our relationship to the great whole and conduct ourselves accordingly. Source :www.whitebison.org

Meditation XVII: No man is an Island..

No man is an island, entire of itself
every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main
if a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were,
as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were
any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind
and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls
it tolls for thee. ~ John Donne source

“Every time you opt in to kindness
Make one connection, used to divide us
It echoes all over the world”
~ Dar Williams (Echoes)

“If you look deeply into the palm of your hand, you will see your parents and all generations of your ancestors. All of them are alive in this moment. Each is present in your body. You are the continuation of each of these people.”

Thich Nhat Hanh

“That knowledge which purifies the mind and heart alone is true Knowledge, all else is only a negation of Knowledge” – Ramakrishna Paramhansa

“Listen, go beyond knowledge and ignorance. Then alone you will be able to know Him. Knowledge of various kinds is ajnana (ignorance). The pride of learning is also ajnana (ignorance). ‘God pervades in all’ this conviction is jnana (knowledge). Knowing Him intimately is called vijnana (supreme knowledge).

Say, a thorn has pricked into your foot. You need another thorn to take it out. When you have taken out the pricked thorn, you throw away both the thorns. To remove the thorn of ajnana (ignorance) you have to first bring in the thorn of knowledge. Then both the thorns of knowledge and ignorance have to be thrown away. He is beyond jnana and ajnana”. Ramakrishna Paramhansa Source : Kathamrita Section XVIII, chapter 2

“1. by knowledge we mean assured belief, that which is known, information, instruction; enlightenment, learning; practical skill. By knowledge we mean data, factors and whatever can be thought about or perceived. 2. knowledge is more than data; it is also the ability to draw conclusions. 3. a whole group or subdivision of a group of data or speculations or conclusions on data or methods of gaining data. L. Ron Hubbard”

Definition
1. set somebody free physically: to release a person, group, population, or country from political or military control or from severe physical constraint
>2. release somebody from social constraints: to set somebody free from traditional socially imposed constraints such as those arising from stereotyping by gender or age

“It’s as if we think liberation a fixed quantity, that there is only so much to go around. That an individual or community is liberated at the expense of another: When we view liberation as a scarce resource, something only a precious few of us can have, we stifle our potential, our creativity, our genius for living, learning and growing.” – Andrea Canaan

[1] “A human being is a part of the whole,
called by us “Universe,” a part limited in time and space. He
experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated
from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This
delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal
desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must
be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of
compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in
its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving
for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a
foundation for inner security.”

attained liberation from the self.” Albert Einstein

“All actions, past, present and future, become extinct in the case of a liberated one, because his sense of being the doer is gone; it was lost along with the ego, who alone was the doer.” – Ramana Maharshi

Definition from Encarta Dictionary

Life is not energy. Energy is the byproduct of life. Life has a motto That any game is better than no game. Life in its highest state is understanding. Life in its lower states is at a lower level of understanding, and where life has ceased to function and has arrived at what one might call total incapability, there is no understanding at all. In life, despite heavy weather one should keep going for there is always a calm ahead. ~L. Ron Hubbard Dianetics 55

“There is only one way, really, to get into a state of living and that’s live! There is no substitute for an all-out, over-the-ramparts, howling charge against life. That’s living. Living does not consist of sitting in a temple in the shadows and getting rheumatism from the cold stones. Living is hot, it’s fast, it’s often brutal! It has a terrific gamut of emotional reactions.” ~LRH Route to Infinity

The essence of all existence is evolution or constant realization of the higher values of life. Prayer, service, devotion and meditation will lead you to a higher and nobler life. There is no pleasure in sense-objects. Eternal Bliss is in the Atman alone. Therefore embrace spirituality, practise purity, develop nobility, do charity and attain Divinity. Swami Sivananda

“Life always bursts the boundaries of formulas.”~ Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (Flight to Arras)

“People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth.” Thich Nhat Hanh
